The Center of Excellence for Research in Infectious Diseases organizes the only comprehensive Clinical Research Internship to provide participants with immersive learning opportunities in clinical research. This university approved internship offers a combination of in-class, hands-on, and project-based learning in all aspects of the clinical research process.
Julio Ramirez, MD FACP, has served as Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases and professor of medicine at the University of Louisville for more than 30 years. Dr. Ramirez’s areas of clinical and translational research include pneumonia, influenza, and emerging respiratory pathogens. He has more than 200 publications in journals such as Annals of Internal Medicine and Clinical Infectious Diseases and is the Editor-in-Chief of the University of Louisville Journal of Respiratory Infections.

Ruth Carrico, PhD FSHEA RN CIC, is a faculty member in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Louisville. Dr. Carrico also leads the University of Louisville International Travel Clinic and the Center’s Clinical Research Internship program. She currently serves as president-elect for the Kentucky Nurses Association.
